sunday-chicken-supper-american-homemade-recipe

This Sunday chicken supper is a very healthy choice because it is packed with fresh vegetables like carrots, green beans, and celery, which provide important vitamins and fiber for your body. Using a slow cooker is a great way to cook because it keeps the nutrients inside the pot rather than boiling them away. The chicken provides lean protein to help keep your muscles strong, and because the recipe uses water and bouillon instead of heavy creams or butter, it is lower in fat than many other comfort foods. While the bacon adds a nice flavor, the majority of the meal is made of whole, natural ingredients that help you feel full and energized.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium carrots, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 celery rib, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 2 cups cut fresh green beans (2-inch pieces)
  • 5 small red potatoes, quartered
  • 1 broiler/fryer chicken (3 to 3-1/2 pounds), cut up
  • 4 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled
  • 1-1/2 cups hot water
  • 2 teaspoons chicken bouillon granules
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • Pinch pepper

  • Instructions

    1. Layer the Pot: In a 5-qt. slow cooker, layer the first seven ingredients (carrots through bacon) in the order listed.
    2. Mix the Seasoning: In a bowl, combine the water, bouillon, salt, thyme, basil and pepper.
    3. Add Liquid: Pour the mixture over the top. Do not stir.
